Scapula Digital Painting (Left Posterior Aspect)
Audience: Anatomy Students
Medium: Digital Painting
(Adobe Fresco and Photoshop)
Purpose: To explore the form & anatomy
of the human scapula, & delineate the areas
of muscle attachment in particular.
Step 1: Reference
Though I was fortunate enough to have access to a human scapula for this piece
(not pictured here), I also used digital and textbook resources for reference.
Step 2: Ideation
The scapula alternates between being relatively flat and featureless, and displaying wild contortions of bone, so I began by exploring its structure digitally and with graphite in an effort to better understand how its form related to its function. Having made several references by hand, I decided to do the base sketch for this image in Adobe Fresco.
Step 3: Render
I finished rendering the scapula in Adobe Fresco, then brought it into Photoshop for labeling and color coding. Even in situ on a skeleton model it’s not entirely clear what the various features of the bone are attached to, so I decided to mark the major muscle attachments of the bone as a reference.
