Millard Rotation Advancement Procedure (Cleft Lip Repair) Pamphlet
Audience: Parents or carers of a child who may be about to undergo this procedure.
Medium: Procreate, InDesign
Purpose: To inform a parent or carer about what this technique involves in an effort to help them emotionally with any fear or apprehension they may be feeling.
Step 1: Reference
I was able to work with the University of Dundee School of Dentistry on this project. I met with a number of the teaching staff, and expressed my interest in making a resource for parents of children with a cleft. They were very receptive to the idea, offering to provide resources and support wherever I needed it.
Unfortunately, I was unable to observe this surgical procedure being performed directly, so instead I gathered a variety of print and video references to work from (none of which I can show here for copyright reasons). Working with the dental staff, I focused on a type of cleft that was relatively common, then I made several labeled sketches of this cleft, noting various defining features.
Step 2: Ideation
I felt that a pamphlet would be the most convenient way to convey this information to a parent or carer, so I wrote a copy deck briefly describing the steps of the procedure, as well as its after care.
Step 3: Initial Renders
I took my sketches into Procreate to make the images for the steps of this surgical procedure. Rather than attempting photorealism, I used a black outline for these images to help delineate the skin distortions that may otherwise be confusing for the layperson.
Step 4: Render
I took the images of the procedural steps I had made into InDesign for final layout and typesetting.
