Hand Dissection Illustration
Audience: Anatomy students
Medium: Digital illustration
(Adobe Fresco & Photoshop)
Purpose: To explore the anatomy of the anterior aspect of the hand, making this exploration available for other anatomy students as a reference.
Step 1: Reference
I started by gathering a variety of references from which to draw. I made several sketches of the human hand in various postures and from several angles, familiarizing myself with general structure and form. I used both cadavers and digital references for this. From there I formed an approach that would allow me to most efficiently display the information I was hoping to convey.
Step 2: Ideation
The hand is an extremely feature-rich part of the body, and I wanted to be able to show these features in a way that balanced access with clarity. I decided that labeling outside the model would be preferable to labeling within the actual structure.
Step 3: Render
Rendering: I initially took my sketches into Adobe Fresco for the naturalistic quality of the brushes. Once I had the line work complete, I brought the image into Photoshop to complete the labeling.
